Toronto International Film Festival is in full swing, and Midnight Madness is to produce goods, as always, characterized by a mix of genres and coming directors and teachers of the old school. In recent years, has introduced new film by Dario Argento and George A. Romero. This year, fans were put off by the last film of John Carpenter - Ward.

Hard to believe it was nine years since the last feature film Carpenter - the very underrated "Ghosts of Mars." I read a series of interviews with Carpenter, who said his film break was the result of a lack of interest in film after a series of difficulties with Ghosts of Mars. Fortunately she had two episodes of the best "Masters of Horror" to keep you busy, plus regular trips to the bank to cash the checks of the remakes of several of his works that were produced during the last decade (more on the way - Carpenter must be the most re-did the filmmaker in the movie!).

Unfortunately, Mr. Carpenter was not present at the screening. Apparently, he received a call to appear for jury duty back in Los Angeles and decided to stay out of jail was a bit more important than attending the first was his first film in nine years. Fans, however, were treated with a video of JC, as he has sent just in case. The video begins with "if you watch this video, I must report to work the jury." If there were a lot of fun, but could not replace the real thing. Fortunately for all present, the film stars were there and was very personally that John Pettie!

The film, set in the '60s, a young runaway named Kristen, who was arrested by the police burnt an old farm, and sent to the local psychiatric institution. It is assigned to the "Ward", which houses five other teenagers. Christian soon discovers that the department also houses the ghost of a young girl named Alice who is killing the girls one by one. Of course, caregivers or psychiatrist says you see a ghost in a mental unit in a safe manner to ensure that you will not get published soon, and most girls are locked up, the more likely they are experiencing mass murder ghost. Kristen must find a way to escape or to unlock the key to Alice murderous bloodlust before it becomes the next victim.

Carpenter proves he is still the master of shock, and knows exactly how to manipulate an audience for "one good scare." There are many moments jumper chair, and it creates a fantastic environment within the Department of Mental Health to raise tension. Like "The Fog" (original - not that crap remake), it is a ghost that does not just say "boo", but the knife as close physically and murder his victims. Although this film is not as good as "The Fog", I will certainly say it has some of the best performances of all films Carpenter. The actors are excellent. Amber Heard, in particular, is incredible as a Christian, and it is easy to see why "All the Boys Love Mandy Lane." It is an excellent actor who carries the film with support from the rest of the cast.

John Carpenter is a famous filmmaker who has worked often in science fiction and horror genres. It is one of the directors of the 1970's-80 mark. His credits include Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, The Fog, Escape From New York, The Thing, Starman, Big Trouble in Little China, living, many of which have been renovated or are developing a new version for the big screen. Carptener career reached a decline in the 1990s with films such as Memoirs of an Invisible Man, The Village of the Damned exhaust, Los Angeles, and Vampire $. Ghosts of Mars. Carpenter has not made a film in almost nine years.

This year's International Film Festival in Toronto, Carpenter is back on the big screen with a film called The Ward. Is mark a triumphant return to the carpenter? Unfortunately not.

Written by Michael Rasmussen and Shawn (the only credit product in the 2005 indie thriller, Long Distance), the story follows a young woman named Kristen (played by Amber Heard), who is institutionalized after apparently set fire to the house. Once inside, "Ward," Kristen is to terrorize the ghost of a previous patient.

The plot is beyond derivatives, and serves only as Carpenter can earn unexplained jump scares the public (shockingly high reveals music signals). The film is shot in an older approach that stands out more stilted than nostalgic. But who knows, maybe the film worked much better in 1980-s.

Kristen psychotic prisoners are all, like her, beautiful young women, the ugliest might go to a young version of Lauren Dern. Of course, this can be justified later in the plot to some extent (although I think it would not be much more than a pretext). But anyway, it seems to be an excuse to turn a shower scene with all the young women - who do not get me wrong, I am not against this form of exercise in genre films, but it is almost no purpose and functions, no real nudity

John Carpenter is back with his first feature film in ten years. The latter was Ghosts of Mars, which was badly damaged and failed at the box office. The film had a really fun and interesting cast that just was not enough to save him from his own bad script and poor production. Between yesterday and today, Carpenter has only managed to produce some films from other filmmakers and make some short films for Mick Garris Masters "series of horror. Curiously, his first masters of the horror film, cigarette burns, was among the best in the series, and probably the best thing he had done in ten years when it was released in 2005. It was this look at the madness that gave me hope to go in the neighborhood. I went in with tempered expectations, hoping for the best. Was I rewarded? Read more ...

Ward is the story of Kristen. We meet him through the woods, at first we are not sure if you run away from something or toward something. Soon it becomes clear that he is the goal house torch. We're not quite sure why, but he did not do, and the act of arson lands in his mental institution. Why is the institution rather than prison? Who knows. In any case, when it comes to his new home, she finds herself in a strange Ward private, only a few other girls that really does not seem particularly crazy, either.

No sooner we start to know these girls, that they start dropping like flies. It is only the less mystery surrounding these murders, as the unit is to take them off too quickly revealed. There is a supernatural element to the murders, which really takes a lot of excitement in history. Kristen and her department can escape Ward buddies, before it's too late? Unfortunately at the end we really do not care.

There are so many things wrong with this movie. The script is sloppy at best and the worst, laughable. There is absolutely no stress, all acts of violence and supernatural evil is telegraphed in advance. There are many clues to the final film every fifteen seconds, and none of them are terribly subtle. Even the closet is bad.

Problems with the room is countless and very stressful. The characters do not develop at all, they are all basically the same from the first frame of their last. There are problems of continuity very strange, like the fact that even when the girls disappear one by one, none of the porters and medical staff seem to notice or care, even when Christian diatribes loudly to his doctor about the ghosts in the corridor. The doctor does not seem in the least shaken or moved by the obvious paranoia Kristen, choosing instead to her sedatives. Another weird problem is that each character has its own wardrobe, although (a) they are institutionalized and people who are not usually spend much time at Macy, and (b) we see their cells and there is nowhere to store personal belongings. It's just surface issues, the real issue is much deeper.

At no point in this film, Kristen generate a positive public response. She spends the entire film is in, or ranting. It is a very flat for which I had absolutely no sense, and his compatriots are even fewer dimensions. Nobody cares what happens. Never show weakness, how are we supposed to empathize with her, if she does not show a crack? This is a big problem. She does not have to be brave and dare to be empathetic, but a small portion of humanity would go a long way. It got to the point that when Kristen finally running for his life, a good half the room laughed openly. I was not one of them, but I can not really say I blame them.

Those who have seen the movie might be able to end my criticism as a sign of the conclusion of the films. Is that the actions of the characters fall into line with the release at the end of the film, but is a much neglected explanation for defects of the films. The result was in doubt for a moment, as I said earlier, every move is telegraphed several minutes in advance, so the sample is not very revealing. He could have done much better, and I am very sad that I feel compelled to write this.

My favorite late period Carpenter movies is the Mouth of Madness, facing a character who loses his mind. Cigarette Burns is also concerned about characters who are mentally unbalanced. For this reason, I thought I was safe enough to go to a Carpenter film, a character featured in an asylum. I was wrong. The Ward wins on all counts when it should hit a home run. It's not scary. Hell, it's not even slightly scary. It is flat, unattractive, and frankly, embarrassing.

I really hope this is not the end for Carpenter, who is an idol of mine, and I am an advocate general. Hell, I did not even like ice cube in Ghosts of Mars. This is wrong, however, and makes me long for a carpenter I'm afraid that's all gone. We see a glimpse of his former greatness of things as cigarette burns, so I really think he is still there. However, I am really sad that this is all we have to look at the ten-year wait for a return of cinema.

Watch The Ward

It was almost a decade since the last stage version of John Carpenter (ghosts less than stellar March), a fallow period in which he was responsible for episodes of Masters of Horror television and saw several of his classics redone. Often very difficult.

But this feature, carpenter 20, reveals the director of Halloween and the thing has not entirely lost his touch, designing an effective if somewhat old-fashioned (both in tone and execution) of chiller applicants in general that off his hat for the precursor of Sam Fuller's Shock Corridor (1963).

Located in Oregon in 1966, Kristen Amber Heard is a troubled woman sent to a psychiatric hospital in North Bend, after burning farm. Set by Jared Harris, alternately dark / funny shrink, Kristen is limited to all women in the department as well as nurses and other batch-resistant patients (Danielle Panabaker, Mamie Gummer, Lyndsy Fonseca, Laura Leigh).

But there is no - or something - if not prowling dark corridors of the hospital, picking people out ...

The next thing, carpenter Lu always been to offer instead of displaying. Although there is more gore here than typical for him, it's not Saw clone, depending on the edition of shock and Boo! times of supply voltage.

The "twist" ending is not hard to guess, but Carpenter wring the tension of the material shot his panoramic camera brand floating creepily through the dark moments.

Meanwhile, flows of courage heard some terribly thin. It has its flaws, but the room comes to rewards.
